about

It happened the first Spring after Teodor was born, on wintry May. In 2011. Yes, we had a short, three-day winter that May. I had a dream. I phoned Marian Bujak - an excellent traditional fiddler from Szydłowiec. He had been dead for more than five years at that time. And when he was alive he liked to (and he did it with) explain the meaning of dreams. So, I got through to him wherever he was and I said – Hallo, is it Mr Marian? – All I hear are the specs of space noise, bubbling in the receiver and motoric rhythm, and after a while I hear very distinct whistling by Mr Bujak. There is a recap again, exactly as it happened in 1999, an excerpt from our encounter, during which Bujak plays his most beautiful Mazurek, and then he declares – This is what music is – I recognise it after the first notes, but it sounds as if it was completely different. He plays more. It’s Mazurek, but as far as I can hear, it doesn’t quite sound like it. And further and further it becomes something else. I recognise the music, seemingly the one by Klejnas, Meto, Bździuch and then even singing from regions of Kurpie, Kujawy, Lublin. Bujak might have heard some of them at festivals, some others perhaps on the radio, other ones he couldn’t have heard at all in his lifetime.
This record is a sketch of traditional music, the music which somehow seems as it has gone away, but now comes back here, only in the Shrovetide funfair masks of the world that turned upside down. Field recordings of a dream, downloaded and compressed onto the hard drive of consciousness. Nothing more. Mock-up heaven.
